Droning To Be Social
The age of drones is upon us. No, I don’t mean the drones in Star Wars either. I’m referring to an unmanned aerial vehicle. Originally designed for use in military operations in the late 1950s. Whilst still being used primarily for military purposes drones were usually used for missions that were too “dull, dirty or dangerous” for manned aircraft.
In recent years they have become more and more commercially available to the general public; quickly becoming a favourite toy amongst photographers and filmmakers wanting to be able to capture stunning aerial shots on film.
Recently a social networking site has popped up around the phenomenon called Dronestagram. Based on Instagram (which is obvious due to the name) it’s mission statement is “Got a drone? Share your best aerial pictures and let’s build a world map of our earth with a bird’s eye view.”
This niche social media site wanted to reward it’s hard-working and talented users with it’s first aerial competition. Judges and sponsors included National Geographic and Go-Pro. Judges determined the best pictures by a criteria that looked at the potential offered by drones film these images. People of earth the future is here.
