Google’s First Social Media Foray to Shut Down
As of September 30th, Google will shut down its first social-networking service, Orkut, which was launched in 2004 the same year that Facebook, which is the most popular social media platform in the world was founded by Mark Zuckerberg.
Orkut was originally designed to help users meet new and old friends and maintain existing relationships. The website is named after its creator, Google employee Orkut Büyükkökten.
Over the last 10 years Orkut has failed to put Google ahead of the competition in the world of social media platforms.
Orkut was most widely used in Brazil and India but hasn’t caught on in other international markets.
A blog post released on Orkut’s website on the 30th of June stated, “Over the past decade, YouTube, Blogger and Google+ have taken off, with communities springing up in every corner of the world. Because the growth of these communities has outpaced Orkut’s growth, we’ve decided to bid Orkut farewell.”
